The Fast-Food Giant Pulls AI-Created Holiday Commercial After Online Criticism.
The global fast-food chain has taken down a Christmas advertisement made using AI after facing widespread public disapproval.
The short film was created via AI-generated video and was originally uploaded publicly for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.
Audience Reaction and Removal
Soon after it aired, viewers on social media lambasted the use of AI in the advert. Many described it as "uncanny" and "jarringly assembled".
"This experience represents an valuable learning as we examine the proper use of generative technology," said a spokesperson from the company.
The advert was produced for the brand by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It showed various things that often go badly over the Christmas break, under the theme "the worst time of the year".
The Phenomenon of AI-Generated Ads
Commercials that include AI-created content have become a growing trend among major corporations, particularly for the Christmas campaign season.
- Another beverage giant has recently launched back-to-back AI-generated holiday ads.
- Inherent Limitations: Since clips created using current AI video tools are more likely to become unstable the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be roughly short in length.
- Industry Concerns: The video also raised concerns about automation in the production sector, with some critics pointing out it might negatively impact opportunities for production staff.
Response from the Production Company
After the video's removal, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, stood by the project.
According to her, the creation took "over a month and a half" and involved producing "numerous versions" which were then shaped in post-production "in the same way we would on any traditional production".
"This was not an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "We consider it a finished piece."
Divisive Audience Sentiment
While the McDonald's commercial was predominantly panned, the response for other AI-generated holiday ads has been varied.
For instance, a consecutive AI-generated holiday ad from another major brand according to analysis received a significant "positive feedback" from online commenters.
However, various brands have likewise received backlash for employing AI in marketing. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that critics described as "lazy" and "disturbing".
The situation underscores the continuing debate within the marketing and production industries about the balance between technological innovation and human craftsmanship.
